Introduction: An Electrifying Turn for Logistics
In a climate where companies are looking to reduce their carbon footprint, FedEx has made a historic decision. By ordering 2,000 Harbinger electric trucks, the delivery giant commits to a cleaner future while saving millions of euros.
Why Electric?
The widespread adoption of electric vehicles not only reduces emissions but also controls fuel costs, which represent a significant portion of operational budgets.
The Strategic Decision by FedEx
This initiative is part of FedEx’s 2040 vision to electrify its entire fleet. By replacing 20 % of its diesel vehicles with electric models, the company forecasts an annual reduction of $40 million in fuel expenses.
Beyond immediate financial gains, the move strengthens FedEx’s image as a responsible and innovative player in logistics.
The Partnership with Harbinger
Harbinger, a Californian startup, designs class‑5 and class‑6 trucks tailored to urban transport needs. The ordered models range from 158 to 208 inches of base width, offering flexibility and performance.
The company has developed a unique powertrain system (EDU) that integrates engine, transmission, and differential into one unit, delivering 440 horsepower and 1,140 lb‑ft of torque.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
Beyond fuel savings, electric trucks reduce CO₂ emissions by about 1.7 million tonnes over their lifespan, significantly contributing to national climate goals.
- Annual savings: $40 M
- Projected service life: 20 years
- Total estimated savings: $800 M
Impact on Drivers
Drivers benefit from reduced maintenance and more stable operating costs, improving job satisfaction.
Technical Details of the Trucks
Each truck is equipped with a 35 kWh battery at 800 volts, configurable in packs ranging from four to six units. This modularity allows range adjustments for specific route needs.
The integrated fast‑charging technology ensures minimal charging time, guaranteeing maximum availability for daily deliveries.
Future Outlook and Conclusion
FedEx plans to continue purchasing electric trucks, aiming to cover its entire fleet by 2040. This approach positions the company as a leader in the energy transition of the logistics sector.
“The future of delivery is electric,” says FedEx’s CEO during the presentation of the new Harbinger trucks.
