Introduction: An Urgent Need for Innovation in Mexican Schools

In Guadalajara, many high schools boast passionate teachers and talented students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. However, the lack of modern robotics labs limits their opportunities for hands‑on learning with cutting‑edge applications.

To address this gap, a multidisciplinary team of 15 engineering students—guided by professors and volunteers from the IEEE Guadalajara Section—decided to create an accessible and mobile solution: RoboMeshA.

The Origin of the RoboMeshA Project

The concept emerged through the EPICS initiative within IEEE, a program that encourages students to develop innovative educational projects. By combining robotics and artificial intelligence, the team aimed to provide an autonomous platform that could be easily transported between classrooms.

The name RoboMeshA reflects the modular structure of the device, which consists of several interconnected modules that can be assembled according to pedagogical needs.

Key Components

The architecture is built around three main elements: a sturdy chassis, a variety of sensors (cameras, gyroscopes), and a programmable microcontroller. Each module is designed to be interchangeable, allowing teachers to create personalized experiences.

Pedagogical Features

RoboMeshA offers a range of activities from basic programming to real‑time AI learning. Students can program the robot to navigate a maze, recognize objects, or even interact with environmental sensors.

The integration of AI modules lets students test image recognition and natural language processing algorithms directly on the device, fostering a concrete understanding of theoretical concepts.

Impact on Learning

Initial feedback shows a notable increase in student motivation. Working with RoboMeshA, they develop not only technical skills but also their ability to solve complex problems as a team.

  • Software programming (Python, C++)
  • Autonomous mobile robotics
  • Simplified machine learning
  • Interdisciplinary collaborative projects

The Influence of IEEE and Financial Support

The IEEE Educational Activities provided a structured framework, educational resources, and a network of mentors to guide students throughout development. Funding from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society enabled the acquisition of essential components.

This collaboration demonstrates the importance of supporting local initiatives that translate academic research into tangible tools for education.

Future Outlook and Call to Action

RoboMeshA is already deployed in several secondary schools in Guadalajara, but its potential extends far beyond. Teams aim to expand the project to other regions of Mexico and develop additional modules for educational robotics.

“The mobility of RoboMeshA allows teachers to transform every classroom into a living laboratory where learning becomes an interactive and tangible experience.” – Professor Maria López, EPICS mentor
